My old co workers son got into an accident and his BMW had a claymore for an airbag, he didn’t get the recall done yet. Above is one of the pieces that went into his sons face

I hate that corporate reaction will be “well you should have replaced it” instead of “our bad for making a literal hand grenade in your dash”.

he had surgery, nearly lost both eyes; doctors told my friend that if his son was any shorter the airbag would’ve gone straight to his throat. They expect a full recovery at least

BMW took about two years to get my airbag in stock from the time they sent the notice out.

[shudder]
The plan here in Oz is to block vehicle registration renewal if the vehicle is subject to recall and hasn’t yet been submitted for recall by the owner.

Seems like a good idea all around. Here efforts have mostly centered around not allowing dealers to sell cars with open recalls, but that’s been met with huge resistance from dealer lobbyists. Don’t recall if those have actually gotten passed though. But it seems pretty straightforward that in states with safety inspections, a car shouldn’t pass inspection if it has open safety recalls.

The big problem with the Takata situation was the scale: namely, catching up to the parts demand because there were millions of the defective ones out there. They had to do the recall in phases, starting with older models in riskier climates. But certainly cars with parts available should get it done. I note that my Merc still has not had it done because the parts haven’t been available. I was able to get my M3 done earlier than its turn by proactively bugging the dealer to order parts.

Here the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industry (car makers and distributors) run https://ismyairbagsafe.com.au
in conjunction with https://www.productsafety.gov.au/recalls/compulsory-takata-airbag-recall
Even States that don’t require compulsory annual inspection know the VIN and registration of the vehicles affected...and if they have been submitted for recall...and could implement that knowledge.
As far as I know...it hasn't happened as yet but it is likely to.

No denying that. However, this action is targeted at those that haven’t even submitted their car for a recall in the first place . Once you do that then you are off the deregistration list...so active participation in the recall is an actual requirement of ownership.

Here we have https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls which should tell you if there are open recalls on your car. The problem is actually getting people to do them, and having the will to say that no, you can’t drive/sell the car until they are fixed.

The inflator in my wife’s 13 Civic has been replaced at least once, maybe twice, and the inflator in our 03 Odyssey has been replaced three times. I still have no faith at all that I will survive the crash only to have my jugular sliced open by shrapnel.

Understood, and I’m completely with you where recalls are available . It’s a good idea that I’d like to see implemented here, along with barring dealers from selling vehicles with open recalls . My point was just that in the somewhat unique Takata case, it wouldn’t do anything for the millions of people for whom no recall is yet available . There’s nothing to “ actively participate in” until you receive the notice (based on registration and/ or insurance data) that it’s available to you, and nothing to “ submit” other than scheduling an appointment with the dealer when they can fit you in. Of course they rolled it out to address the theoretically highest-risk vehicles first, so hopefully the number of people injured while waiting for the rollout isn’t big, but it’s a big country, cars move around a lot, and climate is reportedly a factor in this defect. Even then, they rolled out the driver and passenger recalls separately, years and, potentially, owners apart.
As I recall (ha)
I got the driver side done in my then 11-year-old
M3, but later
sold it to a guy 1500
miles away in a higher-risk region.
I got a notice in the mail
a year later that the passenger side recall
was available (and yes, I du
g up his phone number and told him).

Furious agreement all around then!
In most respects, this issue demonstrates entirely the difference between our respective country’s in terms of both their recall systems and the data capacity and internal sharing of their vehicle registration data...

Somehow I’ve dodged all the recalled airbags. ‘98 Accord, ‘99 4runner, ‘05 Highlander, ‘07 4runner, ‘08 GX470. You’d think one would be on the list

Ha d no idea. Thanks for posting this. I went to the site and it's my passenger airbag. Bet the previous owner didn't know either.

well, they were required to disclose the defect when they did by NHTSA. Repair parts availability was kind of out of their hands for a while. Normal service/repair parts shipment volume is less than 1% of production supply volume. This recall meant that service/repair parts volume was now over 100% of production volume, all the while still having to build regular production parts. and a lot of the inflators are vehicle specific so it’s not like they could go to Autoliv or TRW and get inflators from them overnight.

Yeah, with the scope of the problem, I was expecting to wait a while. I voiced my concerns to my service manager about having to drive around with a hand grenade in my face, and he sent me some data showing the lab failure rates of the BMW inflators vs the other makers. They were much lower, which reassured me a little bit. I didn’t hold any animosity towards my dealer or BMW as I knew their hands were tied. I always expect large corporations to use the cheapest parts possible in order to make the most profit, so I wasn’t surprised by this fiasco.
